St Charles County Master Gardener Steering Committee Minutes

Call to order

Al Winkeler called to order the regular meeting of the Master Gardeners Steering Committee.
Attendance
-
People in attendance were Al Winkeler, Joe Walker, Laura Steimel, Craig Morton, Victoria Gally, and Mary Carey, Mary Medina, Emily Barbee, Kevin Minard, and David Prince.
Secretary’s Report
-
All members having read the minutes of the November 13, 2017 meeting, it was moved by Joe Walker and seconded by Al Winkeler that the minutes be approved as submitted. Vote was unanimous in favor to approve.
Treasury Report
-
Current bank account balance (see treasurer for amount.) It was moved Laura Steimel and seconded by Al Winkeler that the Treasurer's Report be accepted as presented. Vote was unanimous in favor to approve.
MU Extension Specialist
-
Present was Emily Barbee. She advised that the soil tests will going in price to $25.00 for 2018. Carole Grote will be returning back to work on December 11, 2018.
Committee Reports

Demonstrations Gardens- Victoria Gally and Laura Steimel. Victoria and Laura will be using the budget spreadsheet presented at meeting as the starting point for the planned January 2018 Budget approval and communications. The garden leads will be advised that no money is to be spent prior to the 2018 plant sale. The majority of the leads provided absolute needs when they submitted they budgets in October 2017. However, there are a few gardens (herbs, hoop house, orchard, pantry and amendment bins) where the absolute needs is to be determined by further communications with applicable leads. Victoria and Laura will complete this task, revise the spread sheet and she with steering committee for approval ASAP. Budgets will then be communicated to each lead in January, as per the bylaws requirement. After 2018 Plant Sale, garden leads will be solicited for further budget requirements beyond absolute need.

Greenhouse –Amy Templer/ Cindy Platzer. Not present. It was brought up that we need to know the plan for the 2018 Greenhouse operations. Laura Steimel agreed to email them and advised we need an update.

Education- Dig in - Mary Kenley and Mary Medina. Mary Medina presented update on Dig in scheduled Saturday, February 24.2018. All topics and speakers and been arranged. Lunches are included in the price. Price is $35.00. Sign up for Dig in will be handled by extension office and begin in January. Mary Medina requested permission to handle the requests for donations and collecting items for Dig In. Joe Walker motioned that we approve the Dig in Committee handled the collection of donations. Victoria Gally seconded it and vote was unanimous in favor to approve.

Plant Sale-Marsha Brown/Laura Steimel –Seed starting classes will be Wednesday, January 3, 2018 from 12:00pm to 9: 00 pm and on Saturday, January 6, 2018 from 9:00 am to 12:00pm. The class will open to all growers and Master Gardeners.
New/Old Business

2018 MG Class Lead facilitator will be Mary Carey. She is still looking for 2 more volunteers for classes. We do not have 15 people sign up yet, which is what’s needed to have class.

Mary Carey is advising she needs MG and steering committee to send her information for Monday email.

Mary Medina updated us on MOMGA Information. MOMGA meeting dates of March 2, June 1, and November 2. Also one at MG State conference on September 30. We have 2 representative votes at the meetings. MOMGA dues are due by February 25, 2018.

MOMGA’s Role: Member of the leadership team of hort Specialist throughout the state, giving voice to MG’s issues. MU extension through Dr. Trinklein. The list of expectations from the MU was reviewed.

MOMGA web site be updated with link to St. Charles Master Gardener Website.

MOMGA will present awards at conference for MG of the year, MG chapter of year and MG project of the year.

Scholarships available for MG State Conference for each region. MOMGA will present MU University Horticulture student Scholarship for 2018-19.

Joe Walker will pole members to determine if there is interest in having a PowerPoint class for Master Gardeners.

Missouri Green industry Conference Recap- Laura Steimel reported she had attended and resented St. Charles Master Gardens at event.

Emily Barbee will ask Rich Hoorman if he will participate in an interview with St. Peter’s City Cable Department about upcoming Master Gardener Class.

Discussion regarding a request by the Missourians for Monarchs to build a hoop house on the Extension Center property was tabled pending further information.

Holiday Party Recap- Fun was had by all. Was suggested we do RSVP next year. Proceeds from the Silent Auction, meat sales, and donations totaled $419.00.
